Bhimashankar
A famous pilgrimage site on top the ghats. It is one of the Jyotirlings of Shiva and has a beautiful temple with a huge bell, a relic of the Portuguese time. Nag Phani, the highest point, is nearby and commands an excellent view. Bhimashankar is a thickly forested area.
How To Go:-
- From Karjat:-
To Reach Bhimashankar one has to reach karjat & from karjat S.T Buses Goes Upto Khandas Village which is approx. 36 km. away from karjat.
- From Neral:-
From Neral there is regular Transport of Rikshaw availabe upto Kashele and From kashele we can go by Rikshaw upto Khandas.
From Khandas there are two ways to reach Bhimashankar;which are Ganesh Ghat & Shidi Ghat.
Ganesh Ghat is Easy way to reach Bhimashankar but it takes 6-7 hrs.to reach Top.
Shiti Ghat Is Very Tough way to reach Bhimashankar but it takes approx 4-5 hrs.to reach top.
Facsinating Spots:-
Bhimashankar Temple is One of The 12 Jyotirlings Of India.The temple dates back to the 18th century, with some intricate carvings adorning the pillars and door frames. Just opposite the main temple, there is a small shrine dedicated to Shani (Saturn), and outside that hangs a huge Portuguese bell, a war relic symbolizing the victory of Marathas over the Portuguese in the Battle of Bassein in 1739. After seeing the temple you can go to the Hanuman Lake, Nagphani Tok (point) or Serpent's hood, Gupt Bhimashankar, origin of River Bhima, Bombay Point and Sakshi Vinayak. Nagphani Point is the highest point in Bhimashankar, and called that because its shape is like a cobras hood. So you will get to see the surrounding hills and forts of the Matheran range and Padar killa down below.
